Tips and Tricks
Wrap your brushes and rollers in tin foil in between coats so you don’t have to wash them out.
Be careful about washing out MagnaHold paint in your household plumbing as left over Iron material could accumulate in your traps.
After each coat dries, test it’s magnetic attraction with refrigerator magnets. This will help you determine how many coats you want on your magnetic wall.
Use throw-away rollers and brushes to avoid difficult cleanup.
Stir MagnaHold often! As it sits out the Ferrite Additive will settle to the bottom of the can.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does MagnaHold turn a wall into a magnet?
No. The additive in the paint is not magnetic at all. Instead it is a ferrite-based additive that makes the paint, and therefore whatever it is applied to, attractive to magnets.
How many coats will be required?
This varies depending on the strength of magnets used. Typically you will find that two coats will provide adequate attraction with three coats giving your magnets a fine surface to cling to.
What types of magnets will work?
While any kind of magnet will work with a wall painted with MagnaHold you will find that the best type to use are sheet magnets.
Why won’t some of my magnets stick to the treated wall?
Magnets all have different magnetic properties and strengths. Have you ever had a ‘kitchen magnet’ that would barely hold onto the refrigerator? The same goes for MagnaHold. Using higher strength magnets will give you better holding power.
What can I use my MagnaHold for?
In addition to your run of the mill refrigerator magnets you can mount pictures, posters, message boards, etc. You can hold phone messages, notes, recipes and such without pins or nails.
How can I mount pictures already in frames?
Use sheet magnets with adhesive on one side. These can be attached to the back of existing picture frames to make them stick to your MagnaHold.
Can I make my own sheet magnets?
Absolutely! Take a look at our Magnetic Inkjet paper. You can print whatever you like right from your computer onto these 8 1/2" x 11" magnetic sheets. These can be cut, or not, and attached right to your MagnaHold. Print schedules, phone lists, emergency information, menus! If you can print it from your computer, you can attach it to your MagnaHold wall.
How large can I make my MagnaHold?
As large or small as you want. Remember you don’t have to apply MagnaHold from the floor to the ceiling. Position it on the wall based on how it will be used by your family members or co-workers.
What color does the MagnaHold end up being?
Any color you like. After the desired number of MagnaHold coats are applied you can apply a final top coat of your own paint. This means it can be any color you desire.
Can MagnaHold be used on a textured wall?
It can, however all magnets will have more difficulty adhering to a rough surface that to a smooth one. Consider sanding off the texture or utilizing a 'putty coat' to make the wall smooth before applying MagnaHold. Optionally you can use more coats of MagnaHold until the desired attractiveness is achieved.
What will the MagnaHold wall look like?
After the desired number of MagnaHold coats and the final topcoat, your new MagnaHold wall will have a slight texture due to the Iron particles suspended in the paint.
Can I remove the MagnaHold Texture from the wall?
Yes you can. After a coat of MagnaHold dries, it can be lightly sanded prior to the next coat. This requires some additional work but makes for a much smoother wall in the end.
What is the average coverage of MagnaHold?
Typical coverage for MagnaHold is 16 sq ft for a Pint, 32 sq ft for a Quart and 128 sq ft per Gallon. Coverage for your particular application could vary depending on wall conditions, number of coats and the type of applicator used.
What should I use to apply MagnaHold?
You should use a smooth surface foam roller when possible. These rollers are available at home improvement stores as well a the www.MagnaHold.com web site.
Will my dog stick to the MagnaHold?
Only if he has been eating too many refrigerator magnets!!!!
